ABOUT SKY HACIENDA

June Donaldson and Edward Garry live at an altitude of 2,600 metres in Mosoj Llajta, Yotala, 20 minutes from the colonial city of Sucre in Bolivia, South America. Using earth and stones from the land, we have sculpted beautiful buildings which compliment the high desert landscape and incorporate creative and innovative elements of design.

We have designed a high quality hotel in Sucre for guests who want to get off the treadmill of travelling from city to city in South America. At Sky Hacienda you can dictate your own timing and choose how to enjoy your stay, whether it is doing very little or exploring the best that the Andes in Bolivia has to offer.

THE WALLS OF THE ROUNDHOUSE ARE STARTED

The entrance to the Roundhouse, so named because there are no straight walls in the design and because the Roundhouse in London used to be my stomping ground in the 60s!

Ed works on the design for the walls. We are going to use the stones from the land as they are perfect for what is known in Bolivia as vista or facing walls.

You can just see our stonemason maestro Jeronimo working on the inside wall in the living room. The Roundhouse is built into a slight hill and this wall is near the top end of the land boundary.

The living room is on the first level of the three level building. It will also be the tallest as it will be 5 metres high to incorporate a mezzanine running around all but the glazed part to the front of the room.
If you look closely you can see the niches that Ed has incorporated into the design on the inside of the living room wall where the main seating area will face a wood-burning stove to be incorporated into a central column supporting the roof.

To the right of the staircase will be a closet for coats etc. and then continuing into the kitchen area - the whole living room is open plan.

The next 'room' over is the second bathroom and we have used river stone instead of our precious flat faced stones from the land as we are going to tile this room.

To the left of the bathroom is the utility room.

The corridor runs between the second bathroom, the utility room on the left and the walk through wardrobe and Ed's bedroom on the right. You can see the living room in the distance. Both the wardrobe and the main bathroom are on the second level down from the living room and will have a 'Jack and Jill' system with doors leading from both bedrooms. The internal stem walls (that will support the adobe bricks) on the right are thick as they are supporting walls for the terraced roof.

This is my bedroom at the end of the corridor - the lowest of the rooms as it forms the third level of the building.
